Cluny Sham Single
Frequently Asked Questions
What fabric is the Cluny Sham made from?
The Cluny Sham is 100% linen with a cotton trim. The body is woven from our Vintage Linen fabric using a 28 single-metric yarn in both the warp and the weft, producing a balanced weave that is soft and sturdy. The flange border is a delicate 100% cotton cluny lace. All dyeing uses non-toxic dyes.
How does the garment-washing process affect the Cluny Sham?
Each Cluny Sham goes through a special washing process in MATTEO's dyehouse that opens and penetrates the linen fibers, softening them at the individual fiber level. The result is a linen sham that arrives already broken in, with a lived-in texture rather than the stiffness associated with raw linen. Linen also continues to soften with each wash over time.
What sizes are available for the Cluny Sham, and what are the dimensions?
The Cluny Sham is available in three sizes: King (20 x 36 inches / 51 x 91 cm), Queen (20 x 30 inches / 51 x 76 cm), and Euro (26 x 26 inches / 66 x 66 cm). The sham has an envelope closure to hold the pillow insert securely in place.
What is the difference between a sham and a pillowcase?
A sham is more fitted than a pillowcase and uses a closure, such as the envelope closure on the Cluny Sham, to keep the pillow insert in place. A pillowcase loosely encases the pillow and is open on one side. Shams are typically used as a decorative layer on a made bed, while pillowcases serve primarily as a sleep surface covering.
Is linen a good fabric for people with sensitive skin or allergies?
Linen is naturally hypoallergenic and antimicrobial, making it a sound choice for people with sensitive skin or dust-mite sensitivities. The Cluny Sham is also garment-dyed using non-toxic dyes, so there are no harsh chemical residues in the finished fabric. MATTEO's garment-washing process further softens the fibers, reducing any roughness that can irritate sensitive skin.
Is linen good for hot sleepers, and will the Cluny Sham keep me cool?
Linen is naturally moisture-absorbent and temperature-regulating. It draws heat away from the body when you run warm and retains warmth when temperatures drop, making it one of the more breathable fabrics for year-round use. The Cluny Sham's Vintage Linen base carries these same properties, so it works well in warm climates and humid sleeping environments.
How should I wash and care for the Cluny Sham?
Wash in lukewarm water with a gentle detergent and a cool rinse, separating light and dark colors. Do not use bleach or products containing whitening agents such as chlorine bleach, alpha hydroxy acids, or benzoyl peroxide, as these will damage the garment-dyed finish. Tumble dry on low heat and remove promptly to minimize wrinkling; line drying gives the best results. If ironing is needed, press while slightly damp on the Linen or High setting. What colors is the Cluny Sham available in, and does color vary between dye lots?
The Cluny Sham is available in 15 colors: White, Moon, Off White, Greige, Salt, Iris, Mica, Oat, Bay, Alpine, Coal, Fig, Bark, Night, and Smoke. Because garment-dyeing is an artisanal process rather than a standardized one, MATTEO allows for a shade variation of plus or minus 10% between dye lots. If purchasing multiple shams at once, ordering them together gives the best chance of a consistent color match.
